Scorpion hunting

Bucklands Guest Farm, located near Steytlerville in the heart of the Karoo, offers a unique opportunity for guests to explore the nocturnal world of scorpion hunting. As the sun sets and the stars emerge, the farm’s rugged landscape comes alive with a variety of scorpion species, including the famous Drab Thicktail Scorpion (Uroplectes planimanus).

The Drab Thicktail, known for its stocky body and thick, curved tail, is one of the most common and resilient species found in the region. Its muted brown colour helps it blend seamlessly into the dry, rocky environment, making it a challenge to spot. Despite its intimidating appearance, the Drab Thicktail is not aggressive unless provoked.

Guests on a guided scorpion hunt will also encounter other species such as the Opistophthalmus glabrifrons, a smaller, lighter scorpion with long pincers and a pale body. These fascinating creatures play an important role in the ecosystem by controlling insect populations and contributing to the balance of the Karoo's delicate environment.

Scorpion hunting at Bucklands Guest Farm offers a thrilling, educational experience for nature enthusiasts. With expert guides and the pristine Karoo night sky above, it’s an unforgettable way to connect with the wild side of South Africa’s Eastern Cape.
